Ticks cause skin irritations and can spread diseases such as Lyme disease which can be fatal to dogs.
You may notice your dog scratching or chewing at his hind end. You may also see small pepper like flakes on your dog’s skin, this is flea dirt. Ticks are commonly mistaken as skin tags, they burrow their head into the skin, leaving their ends out. If you are unsure, one of our technicians would be happy to help you.
Flea and tick prevention come in many forms. Our doctors would do an assessment to see what best suits your pet, also giving instructions on how to use, how to check and what to look for.
Preventions now come in chews, which can be taken as a treat, or topically on the back of the neck. If you find a tick on your dog, we can send it away to be tested for Lyme disease, and then follow up once results are in. We also have a blood test that can test for Lyme disease in your dog. If Lyme disease is detected, specific antibiotics are prescribed to the dog.
